Gottfried Helnwein’s works deal with the often silent suffering of children. The abused, wounded, sent to war protagonists of his hyperrealistic pictures express the tragedy of the violence on children and their need for help and protection. Helnwein portrays them in implicitly brutal images, covered with blood, wearing a uniform or holding a weapon, counterposing infantile innocence to the abuses of war.

From July 3 to August 15, 2021, the Monumental Halls of the Biblioteca Marciana in St. Mark Square will host The silent glow (Quel silenzioso bagliore), a selection of paintings by the Austrian photographer and painter, one of the most successful German speaking artists worldwide, as well as one of the most controversial.

Eleven artworks, among which there are some large paintings, are displayed in the Sala Sansoviniana, next to works on loan from the Albertina Museum in Vienna. This historic space creates a communication between Helnwein’s paintings and the works of the great masters Tiziano, Veronese, and Tintoretto that decorate the ceiling of the library.
