Starting March 28, the Stanze della Fotografia on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore will host two exhibitions devoted to the shots of Helmut Newton and Patrick Mimran, two exceptional artists who have influenced both photography and the way we see.

THE ARTISTIC LEGACY OF HELMUT NEWTON

Helmut Newton, real name Helmut Neüstadter, who was born in Berlin in 1920 and emigrated with his family in 1938 from Nazi Germany, was one of the great masters of photography, and the exhibition Helmut Newton. Legacy at “Stanze della Fotografia” on the island of San Giorgio shows us his rich visual legacy.

The exhibition, traces Helmut Newton’s human and artistic journey in six chronological chapters: his beginnings in the 1940s and 1950s in Australia, the 1960s in France, the 1970s in the United States, the 1980s between Monte Carlo and Los Angeles, and the numerous shoots around the world in the 1990s.

Perhaps best known for his highly personal way of capturing the female nude as evidenced by his celebrated volume Big Nudes, Newton also left an indelible mark in fashion photography by collaborating with prestigious magazines and designers.
Newton’s elegant, daring and, in some cases, pioneering work in the medium, elected him as a protagonist and witness of the twentieth century who, after Australia and the United States, returned to settle in Europe, with frequent sojourns in Venice, which he portrayed in his own right, as in the shots for Queen magazine in 1966.

PATRICK MIMRAN’S OUT OF FOCUS

Patrick Mimran. Out of focus is the exhibition that brings to the Stanze della Fotografia thirty previously unseen and never exhibited in Italy shots by French artist Patrick Mimran.

Born in Paris in 1956, Patrick Mimran is a multifaceted artist who used many different media in the 1980s, moving from photography to technology, from music to multimedia.

Mimran has made out-of-focus an art, working on the lack of sharpness not only of contours, edges around subjects, but precisely of the entire photographic composition. At first the image may appear abstract and alienating but, the more you look at it, the more you catch those details that bring it closer to reality. This aspect contrasts with the sharpness of the color and smaller format photos that accompany and define the large photographs.

Abstraction may appear as the opposite of photography born to record the real, but for Mimran this technique is the best way to capture and bring to light the essence of the subject. Through its indefinable forms, the Out of Focus exhibition unveils the unconscious and reveals that photography is only seemingly recording reality while it also knows and can capture its magical, fairy-tale dimension that without the filter of the lens would remain hidden.
