From March 24 to June 23, the exhibition Affinità Elettive (Elective Affinities), presents some works previously unseen in Italy and from the Museum Berggruen – Neue Nationalgalerie, placed in dialogue with masterpieces from the Gallerie dell’Accademia.
Seventeen works from Berlin’s Museum Berggruen, including works by Picasso, Matisse, Klee and Giacometti, are integrated into the exhibition itinerary of the Gallerie dell’Accademia, dialoguing and confronting the permanent collection.

Picasso’s Dora Maar aux ongles verts is juxtaposed with Giorgione’s La Vecchia, thus comparing two works separated by five hundred years of history but both depicting a woman in intimate visual conversation with the painting’s author. Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture relates to Antonio Canova’s, and the sketches for Les Damoiselles d’Avignon-a painting that traditionally fixes 1907 as the beginning of Cubism-are next to sketches by Giambattista Tiepolo, and despite the abysmal formal difference, the juxtaposition offers stimulating food for thought.

The exhibition then continues at the Casa dei Tre Oci on the island of Giudecca, where four works from the graphic collection of the Gallerie dell’Accademia and 26 from the Museum Berggruen will be on view: watercolors and works on paper by Klee, Picasso, Cézanne and Matisse.

The dialogue between works from the two collections is the red thread of the exhibition that allows visitors to discover them by following their own individual path. Iconographies and subjects similar in proximity of shapes and colors, in fact, create an unpredictable effect when viewed together.
