In this second year of their four-year artistic direction of Biennale Teatro, authors and directors Stefano Ricci and Gianni Forte (ricci/forte) remind us that, when thinking in color, the world appears in a different way. They chose Rot, “red” in German, as the title this 2022 edition, taking inspiration from both the harsh sound of the word—reminescent of a scratch, a wound—and its meaning. Indeed, the color red evokes the fire of passion, of blood, of crime, and at the same time, the fire of emotions and Eros. Directors declared that this will be «a “mirror” festival, vibrating with the world, which listens to the changes of societies aiming at two primary missions: Creation and Dissemination.»

In addition to the already mentioned usual venues, some performances and events are taking place at Palazzo Trevisan Degli Ulivi, while the site specific performances of Biennale College Theatre 2022 are in Campo Sant’Agnese and Campo Santo Stefano.

The title of Biennale Danza 2022 is Boundary–less, and the festival presents only premieres. Artistic director and choreographer Wayne McGregor explains how «Physical borders fade as quickly as the geographic ones are redrawn. Nevertheless the human spirit constantly transcend itself by moving toward a state of perpetual indefiniteness, impermeability, freedom.»
Perhaps, art production is itself the act thanks to which we can overcome barriers, limits, borders—a “different” way of thinking. And indeed, the artists performing this year escape fixed categorizations precisely because they transcend genres and means of expression. This “limitless state” is an ever-changing challenge for the audience, caught in a game between perception and interpretation.

In additions to the already mentioned usual venues, some performances are taking place at Teatro Malibran.

The 66th International Festival of Contemporary Music–artistic director Lucia Ronchetti–is Out of Stage. The festival offers a wide perspective on contemporary music theatre and on the role of new technologies and multimedia, including the programming of virtual and augmented reality applied to sound, in new forms and genres codified by the composers involved in the festival.

The program includes Experimental Music Theatre, Sound Installation, Radio Play, Performative Lecture, Experimental Performance, Scenic Concert, Performative Music Theatre, Performative Sound Installation, Augmented Reality Sound Installation, Performative Radio Composition and Sound theatre, Choral Music Theatre, Prying Ritual, and the contemporary revival of two ancient genres—the Sacra Rappresentazione and the Madrigale Rappresentativo.
Moreover, the program also includes Italian premieres of works co-produced with other European institutions, various classics of “instrumental theatre,” and works by composers who are highly recognized in this field.

In addition to the already mentioned usual venues, some live concerts, shows, meetings, and events are taking place in different locations, among which are Teatro La Fenice, Teatro Goldoni, Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello di Venezia, Scuola Grande San Rocco, Biblioteca Marciana, and Basilica di San Marco.
