At Palazzo Corner Mocenigo, two exhibitions to learn about Venice and its lagoon

On the occasion of the celebrations for the 1600th anniversary of the foundation of the city of Venice, the Veneto Regional Command of the Guardia di Finanza presents two exhibition itineraries in the splendid setting of Palazzo Corner Mocenigo in Campo San Polo, which can be visited for free until 7 November 2021.

LIVING BETWEEN LAND AND WATER: from prehistoric stilt houses to Venice (Vivere tra terra e acqua: dalle palafitte preistoriche a Venezia)

Organized in collaboration with the Direzione Regionale Musei Veneto, this temporary exhibition compares the history and culture of Venice, a city which stands on wooden foundations, made of tree trunks stuck into the soft and loamy soil of the lagoon, with the pile-dwelling settlements buried in the peaty deposits of ancient lakes and rivers of the Alpine areas.

The great theme of building and living in humid environments is the focus of the exhibition, which shows its salient features and , and proposes a path that illustrates a fundamental moment in our history, that is, the pile-dwelling world. All this thanks to scientific data from the most up-to-date research and from the direct observation of the archeological finds on display.

Thus, the exhibition presents a comparison and a dialogue between two realities separated by centuries of history but united by the same goal to build and live in a humid environment.

LIVING LAGOON: know it, respect it, protect it. Live it (Laguna InVita: conoscerla, rispettarla, tutelarla. Viverla)

The exhibition focuses on the theme of the sea, with artworks representing the fish species that populate the upper Adriatic Sea and the Venetian lagoon, and with the awareness of how much the in-depth knowledge of such species is necessary for the protection of marine biodiversity and for the health of the community.

Realized in collaboration with the Venezia InVita Association, the exhibition includes a selection of 60 watercolors by the renowned Venetian artist Claudio Trevisan.

The remarkable and faithful illustrations on the theme “fish and mollusks of the lagoon” are an important artistic representation which serves as a means of dissemination about the local marine fauna and the ecosystem that hosts it.

In the context of the exhibition, there is also a section of works dedicated to the waterborne and airborne service of the Guardia di Finanza Corps.

The two exhibitions are also an unmissable occasion to visit Palazzo Corner Mocenigo, built between 1552 and 1564 after the designs of Michele Sanmicheli. Here, over the years, the Corner family assembled an extraordinary collection of artworks, from Antonello da Messina to Giovanni Bellini, from Andrea Mantegna to Pietro da Cortona, which at the beginning of the Seventieth century were taken care of by Giambattista Tiepolo. At that time, Tiepolo was a young artist at the beginning of a promising career which will leave and indelible mark on the palace.

The palace changed hands many times after the death of Laura, the last of the Corner, and finally, in 1916, was rented to the Guardia di Finanza, to which it remained permanently. Today, it hosts the headquarters of the Veneto Regional Command, to which all the “Fiamme Gialle” working in Veneto refer, for the safeguard of the citizens’ fundamental rights.
