On July 5, 2025, Casanova Opera Pop, set in 18th-century Venice, lands in St. Mark’s Square. With 23 performers on stage, 2 hours of music, 35 songs sung live, 120 costumes, more than 30 scene changes, the epic theatrical musical conceived, composed and produced by Red Canzian goes on stage in the very place symbolic of the tale itself.

The play recounts Giacomo Casanova as he returns from exile, naturally embroiled in political and amorous intrigue and a stalwart defender of Venice from international power games.

The immersive stage set is made up of photographs taken in deserted Venice during the lock down of 2020 and computer-processed to render the settings of the city and its places with a disorienting hyperrealism that promises to transport viewers inside the places of an eighteenth-century Venice. This play of Venice within Venice, onstage and off, takes the viewer and performers into a kind of metareal spectacle, in which stage and location, characters and spectators mingle and merge into a unique experience.

Thirty-five-year-old Giacomo Casanova is played by Gian Marco Schiaretti, one of the purest talents raised in Italy and successful abroad. Next to him, in the part of Francesca Erizzo, destined to win his heart, we find Silvia Scartozzoni. The role of the villains is given to gipeto, who plays the powerful and corrupt Inquisitor Pietro Garzoni, and Manuela Zanier, playng the part of the wicked Countess von Steinberg.

Original direction of the play is by Emanuele Gamba, with Chiara Canzian as Assistant Director and with associate direction by Carolien Canters and creative direction by Anthony van Laast for Nick Grace Management.
Executive production is by Retropalco, and choreography is by Roberto Carrozzino and Martina Nadalini.
Casanova Opera Pop enjoys the free patronage of the Ministry of Culture and the City of Venice.
